Several Premier League clubs made approaches to sign the talented centre back, but he was convinced by United's proposal of a long-term project and eventual first-team pathway.

Emsden-James has impressed scouts with his ball-playing ability and athleticism, possessing many of the attributes associated with top-level modern centre backs.

The club’s recent track record when it comes to signing young players and providing them with first-team opportunities puts them in a strong position to attract in-demand talent from other clubs.

Ayden Heaven and Chido Obi are fine examples of this pathway, having both arrived from Arsenal in the last 12 months and made a handful of first-team appearances.

Heaven in particular has established himself as an important member of Ruben Amorim’s first-team squad, proving to be a trusty option in United’s back three whenever called upon.

United are keen to identify and recruit the country’s most talented young players, and see Southampton’s Emsden James as being firmly in that bracket.

The club will pay a compensation fee to Southampton in the region of £1m, similar to what was paid for Chido Obi last summer.

The 17-year-old is held in high regard by the club, with Ruben Amorim in particular thought to be keen on handing him a first-team debut before the season's end.

Mantato's versatility has been a point of note internally, his ability to play as a wing-back on either side, or alternatively as a more direct winger makes him an attractive option for Amorim’s first-team squad.

The youngster was the subject of interest from a number of Premier League clubs last summer, with attempts made by the likes of Arsenal and Newcastle to sign him on a scholarship deal, though United were able to convince the England youth international to stay on for another two years.

Born in Manchester, Mantato joined the Red Devils at pre-academy level (under-9), and has played one or two years above his age group for the majority of his time at the club - a positive indicator associated with a high ceiling and favourable physical attributes.

The Dane was a nuisance in the best sense, winning 9 of his 11 ground duels - more than any other player on the pitch. His authoritative occupation of the left-flank caused endless troubles for Sociedad, who struggled to contain his dynamism and aggression as he attacked the space vacated by the Spaniards’ high line.

His mere left-footedness goes a long way in providing balance to United’s attack, with the option should Dorgu choose, to take the ball on the outside and cut it back into the box from the byline - something you don’t get from a right footed left-wing-back, unless they possess exceptional ability to go on the outside - a ‘two-way’ winger.

Questions have been raised by fans and the media regarding the long-term efficacy of United’s deployment of wing-backs - a structural feature that feels foreign to a club whose most successful periods have seen traditional wingers championed as the cornerstone of their attacking exploits - but Dorgu’s early performances in red surely go some way in answering them.

Who can do Dorgu’s job on the opposite flank?

The currently injured Amad showed encouraging signs earlier in the season of being a viable option for the role, though many would argue his creative and technical qualities playing on the inside go somewhat to waste at wing-back.

Many fans had pinned their hopes on United signing 17-year-old Portuguese wonderkid Geovany Quenda from Sporting Lisbon - a young star with a pre-existing understanding of Ruben Amorim’s demands having made his debut under the Portuguese head coach at just 16 - though reports now suggest he’s Chelsea bound.

Even Mazraoui, who initially looked a fantastic addition to Ten Hag’s squad in a more traditional right-back role, now finds himself in a state of awkward limbo whereby no clear role in Amorim’s system plays directly to his strengths.

The Moroccan lacks the bullyish physicality and athleticism required to thrive as a wing-back, and his best performances since the arrival of Amorim have come from the right of United’s back three.

Elite-level pace, strength and stamina are requisite qualities for any Premier League wingback, especially one playing for Ruben Amorim.

Under the Portuguese head coach, wingbacks are expected to play high and wide, often looking to run the ball to the by-line with the support of their inside #10, and pick out unmarked teammates close to goal, though they must also be prepared to cover obscene amounts of ground when their side are without the ball.

It’s no job for the feint of heart - one that demands of you more running and physical toil than anyone else on the pitch. You need not only an engine fit for a spitfire, but an intuitive understanding of how to conserve and expend energy reserves without burning out prematurely.

A friendship has blossomed on the pitch this season as Jaydan Kamason and Bendito Mantato have linked up on the right flank for United’s youth sides to devastating effect.

The pair have developed an understanding of each other’s movement habits and combine well in the final third as a result. Despite neither profiling as a typical wing-back (if that really exists), I believe both suit Amorim’s vision for the role in different ways.

Jaydan Kamason, 18

Jaydan Kamason - a right-back by-trade - evidenced his capacity for the aforementioned physical demands against Arsenal in the FA Youth Cup in February, as he completed 130 minutes of gruelling football without visibly fatiguing. His 82nd minute wonder-strike to keep United in the tie was accompanied by an assured performance on and off the ball that stood him out well from his peers.

Kamason became the first graduate of United’s Emerging Talent Programme (PTP) to sign a professional contract with the club in December 2023, and has developed steadily since.

The now 18-year-old right-back was brought to the club by Luke Fedorenko, who currently heads up United’s academy recruitment operation. Kamason played briefly for grassroots side Stockport Vikings while trialling for United at the age of 10.

Adam Lawrence spoke positively about Kamason after United’s victory against Arsenal in the FA Youth Cup this season: “It was a tremendous moment for him to score. He’s a fantastic kid and we’re really excited about him.”

Kamason was a bright-spark that day, routinely finding his way into Arsenal’s box either by running onto a pass or carrying it there himself. His physical and technical capacity to take on a defender and drive with the ball through the final third provided United with a constant threat on the right hand side - an outlet in possession that was never more than an opportune switch of play away from causing some real damage.

Kamason - like Dorgu - thrives at running in-behind defensive lines, though he also possesses the necessary passing ability to play his teammates into those spaces from deep. His first of two assists against Chelsea in the third round of the FA Youth Cup demonstrated this well.

Kamason paused to weigh up his options, before floating a wonderfully weighted ball over the top for the prolific Chido Obi to latch onto, the Dane doing well to out-muscle his defender and apply the necessary finish to equalise for United, who would go on to win 5-1.

Kamason’s second assist that evening evidenced his crossing ability as he delivered a pin-point outswinger to find the head of Gibraltar international James Scanlon. Kamason being a handy and reliable crosser is a relatively new but of course welcome addition to his repertoire.

The 18-year-old is a defensive stalwart, using a combination of athleticism and anticipation to provide United with a stubborn blockade on the right-flank. This area of Kamason’s game has always been strong, with the majority of his earlier years until under-16 level spent playing as a centre-back.

Several times this season has Kamason been relied on to make crucial last-ditch tackles, made possible by his impressive pace over long distances. One that comes to mind is this outstanding effort to deny Newcastle’s #7 from scoring on the break:

Kamason certainly profiles more similarly to Dorgu than a Quenda for example, as a natural full-back playing in a more advanced role. This is fine, but Amorim at Sporting often deployed a somewhat asymmetrical wide pairing, with one wing-back closer resembling a full-back, and the other taking the shape of a winger.

Bendito Mantato, 17

Perhaps the most convincing Quenda-imitator at United, Manchester-born Bendito Mantato possesses many of the traits that makes the Sporting star so desirable, and importantly a good fit for the right-wing-back role.

Originally recruited to the club at the pre-academy level (under-9), Mantato is a first-year scholar, but has been a mainstay for United’s under-18s for two years now. Mantato signed his scholarship deal last summer, convinced by the club’s incentives of a first-team pathway despite discussions with Arsenal, who were keen to snap up the highly rated youngster.

Unlike Kamason, Mantato is a left-footer, and presents as more of a traditional winger, who spends the majority of his minutes on the right under manager Adam Lawrence. The same is true for Quenda, who rose through the ranks at Sporting and Portugal’s youth sides playing as a natural right-winger.

For England’s youth sides however, Mantato has predominantly been utilised at left-back, as well as during a brief stint for United’s under-18s when he first made the jump as an under-16 last season. This experience playing in a more defensive role can only serve to benefit him in the long-run, especially if he’s tasked with playing as a wing-back for United’s first-team.

Vitally, Mantato profiles as a ‘two-way’ winger - adept at running the ball on the inside and outside, compensating for his ‘wrong-footedness’ as a potential right-wing-back.

As touched upon earlier, the role in question demands the utmost physical and athletic capacity to be a dominant wide presence throughout a 90 minute game - something Mantato too possesses. He’s unsuspectingly strong in duels given his relatively slender frame, much of which comes down to great core strength. His pace and mobility are also impressive, allowing him to burst past defenders and pose a real threat in 1v1 situations.

Yesterday the 17-year-old was handed his first under-21 start by Travis Binion, as United faced West Bromwich Albion in the PL2. Mantato played in his preferred position at right-wing, and stood out as United’s best player in the first-half.

His first contribution of the game, an assist for Welsh striker Gabriele Biancheri, demonstrated the value he brings in a creative capacity playing on the right for United.

Tyler Fletcher provided the pre-assist for Mantato, the winger running onto the ball close to the byline and delivering a first-time cross with his weaker right foot to Biancheri, who finished past West Brom’s keeper from point-blank range.

This is the exact type of goal Ruben Amorim wants his Manchester United side to score - Fletcher in this scenario takes on the role of the inside-right #10, supporting the wing-back (Mantato) who goes on the outside to provide the cross.

Mantato is a handful for defenders, with a twitchiness that makes his movements and intentions hard to read. Highly mobile, the recently turned 17-year-old uses quick changes of pace and direction to wrong-foot defenders before bursting past them.

His second major contribution during United’s 5-1 thrashing of West Brom yesterday evening - an impressive solo goal - evidenced this unpredictability.

The pair responsible for United’s first goal would combine again here, but with a role reversal that saw Biancheri turn creator for Mantato.

His ambiguous body positioning made it difficult for West Brom’s defender to predict the next move. This is the value of a ‘two-way’ winger - defenders are far less likely to commit to a tackle if they can’t reliably anticipate whether you’ll take the ball on the inside or out.

As a result, Mantato was able to nimbly cut the ball onto his stronger left foot, before finishing high at the near-post.

"He was in a really good place. He is in a really good place now. Obviously, he's got a really good chance. The football club thinks a lot of him. Brilliant mentality", said under-21s head coach Travis Binion to MUTV after the game last night.

As emphasised by Binion, Mantato has admirers amongst senior staff at United, who are keen to provide the youngster with a clear pathway to United’s first-team.

The 17-year-old spent much of the winter period out injured, but could be picking up form at just the right time to be handed a first-team opportunity.

Both Mantato and Kamason have trained with United’s first-team squad on a number of occasions, and are well placed to provide an answer to Amorim’s RWB dilemma, should the opportunity be presented to them.

If either of them were to prove capable of performing at a high level in this role for United’s first-team, it would represent a victory for Amorim and INEOS, who could allocate funds that would have been spent on a wing-back elsewhere in the squad.

It’s likely that some of the comfort exuded by Heaven on the ball stems from his days playing as a midfielder for Arsenal’s younger age groups before he was moved to centre-back as a first-year scholar.

Ayden Heaven was named alongside Ethan Nwaneri in Arsenal’s 2023 scholarship intake, but their trajectories have since taken them down markedly different paths.

Nwaneri - who became the youngest Premier League debutant of all time in September 2022 at the age of 15 years and 181 days - now finds himself a first-team regular under Mikel Arteta, with Bukayo Saka’s unfortunate (yet timely for Nwaneri) injury absence offering a free-run at Arsenal’s right-wing position.

The now 17-year-old has taken to the opportunity like a duck to water, with eight goals and one assist in 1080 minutes this season - averaging a goal contribution every 120 minutes.

After being bestowed an obscenely early - arguably premature - taste of senior football, followed by a prolonged stint away from the pressures of the first-team setup, Nwaneri’s decision to stay and trust Arsenal’s promises of a pathway despite keen interest from many of the Premier League and Europe’s biggest clubs now appears an astute one.

Heaven conversely deemed a move away from the Emirates to be most beneficial for his development, and so began to explore his exit options towards the latter stages of 2024.

Among the clubs interested were Eintracht Frankfurt, Barcelona and of course, Manchester United.

The youngsters are said to have impressed Amorim and his coaching staff in first-team training and performances for United’s youth sides, and are deemed ready to provide value off the bench should they be called upon.

Jack Moorhouse (19), attacking midfield

The senior-most of the three, Jack Moorhouse has excelled for United’s under-21s this season playing predominantly in an advanced midfield role.

Moorhouse is a technically gifted midfielder with outstanding physical qualities. He has a keen eye for goal, often resulting from his own solo gambits in the final third.

The 19 year-old - who is eligible to represent England and Ireland - works tirelessly out of possession, and uses his impressive athleticism and ground coverage to press and make defensive recoveries when his side are without the ball.

Ruben Amorim could be seen watching on from the side-lines in December (alongside some esteemed company) as United’s under-21s dispatched of Southampton in a convincing 5-1 victory, during which Moorhouse scored a brace and was quite comfortably the best player on the park.

The necessity for Amorim’s decision to play Kobbie Mainoo through the centre of a front-three - flanked by Alejandro Garnacho and Amad - speaks to a disturbing lack of goalscoring threat United currently generate, with ‘natural’ striker options - Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee proving for the most part ineffective.

This position isn’t entirely alien to Mainoo though, despite him not being deployed there since his first-team breakthrough - in fact the Stockport-midfielder played as a striker for a sizeable portion of his formative upbringing at Manchester United.

Neil Harris - a former Manchester United academy coach who worked with Kobbie Mainoo during his early developmental years - shed light on the 19 year-old’s time spent playing as a striker for United’s youth sides, in conversation with Umir and H (@umirf1 and @htomufc on Twitter respectively) on the Overlap Breakdown:

“He was a really talented centre-forward up to the under-12/13s, because he was outstanding holding onto the ball.”, recalled Harris.

And as United’s desperate pursuit of Frenkie De Jong concluded anticlimactically, Kobbie Mainoo stepped into the Dutchman’s shoes that never were. Fans who once longed to sign the Barcelona star suddenly found themselves indifferent to his situation.

A hat-trick on Wednesday evening against Chelsea in the FA Youth Cup has only catalysed these conversations, and as United’s Sunday afternoon Premier League clash with Tottenham fast approaches, the prospect of young Obi receiving his first senior call-up appears increasingly plausible.

Now the highest scoring under-18 player of all time in England, Chido Obi has sparked conversation amongst Manchester United fans, some of whom are beginning to wonder if he may be ready for involvement in Ruben Amorim’s first-team squad amid their goalscoring woes - his hat-trick last night only adding fuel to the fire.

United and Obi’s night didn’t begin as planned, going behind in the 20th minute against the run of play, but Adam Lawrence’s Reds quickly pulled together to mount a convincing response.

Manchester United and Chelsea - two undisputed FA Youth Cup titans in their own right - were bidding to progress to the next round of the country’s most iconic youth competition before kick-off at Leigh Sports Village yesterday evening.

Chelsea have won the competition an impressive nine times, seven of which came between 2010 and 2018 during a superb run of dominance underpinned by a monopoly of top-level youth recruitment. The likes of Mason Mount, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Ruben Loftus Cheek, Tammy Abraham, Fikayo Tomori and Reece James emanated from these sides.

This is second only to United of course, who boast a record eleven wins, the latest coming in 2022 when Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo announced their talents to a packed Old Trafford in the final against Nottingham Forest, and for that gifted pair the rest is history.

Neither Adam Lawrence nor Hassan Sulaiman - United and Chelsea’s under-18 managers respectively - would leave anything in reserve for this one, both fielding particularly strong line-ups.

In Red, the likes of Gabriele Biancheri, Chido Obi, Jack and Tyler Fletcher and Harry Amass stand out as well-known names (not to detract from their teammates who all offer similar quality), some contributing significantly to the success of last season during which Adam Lawrence led his side to three domestic trophies.

United also had the luxury of an incredibly strong bench featuring Godwill Kukonki (who Ruben Amorim has spoken fondly of), Shea Lacey, Jim Thwaites, Jayce Fitzgerald and Amir Ibragimov.

In Blue, a younger side featuring a number of exciting prospects like Shumaira (Shim) Mheuka, Kiano Dyer, Ollie Harrison and a handful emerging from a particularly outstanding under-16 crop, namely Ryan Kavuma-McQueen, Reggie Walsh and substitute Ibrahim Rabbaj.

The momentous occasion saw a star-studded attendance which included the likes of Darren Fletcher, Jason Wilcox (technical director), Christopher Vivell (recruitment director) and Nick Cox (academy director) present at leigh Sports Village. These are figures that play a marked role in overseeing the pathway’s and developmental trajectories of United’s young players.

Darren Fletcher, who currently acts as a portal of communication between the club’s academy and first team was no doubt filled with a strong sense of pride watching his two boys start together in United’s midfield.

Mheuka got the game underway for Chelsea who looked bright in the opening minutes but soon appeared perturbed as they found their unconvincing efforts to play out from the back thwarted by United’s fierce high press.

The Reds having ridden out some early attacks launched by Chelsea found their groove and began moving the ball with pace and conviction in the opposition’s half.

Harry Amass found himself felled on the edge of the box winning a free-kick which Jack Fletcher stood over, delivering a promising out-swinging ball into the danger-zone, certain to be met by the seeking-missile of Chido Obi’s head if it weren’t for a huddle of Chelsea defender’s crowding the centre of the box.

The complimentary striker duo of Obi and Biancheri set the tone for their side’s attacking pursuits early-doors with a number of well-timed runs met by the deft playmaking efforts of United’s midfielders and full-backs.

It looked like United would surely find their opener as Jack Fletcher was found on the left of the box by a looping ball, but his attempt deflected off the crossbar and fell to James Scanlon, his close-range effort miraculously kept out by Chelsea’s Hudson Sands with a cat-like reflex-save.

Despite United looking the far more threatening side, it was Chelsea who broke the deadlock after 20 minutes played, as Biancheri was pick-pocketed by Dyer in the middle of the park who squared the ball across to Walsh for a confident first-time finish.

A visible frustration fell on the faces of United’s players who knew they’d given away a cheap goal despite having been the dominant side up to that point, though their subsequent response was everything manager Adam Lawrence could have hoped for.

This was Ruben Amorim’s response to Laurie Whitwell’s question regarding Lisandro Martinez’ aggressive midfield gambit which led to his side’s winning goal at Craven Cottage on Sunday evening. The Athletic’s Manchester United correspondent asked whether centre-backs aggressing into the midfield was something the Portuguese head-coach hoped to see more often.

“Nowadays, sometimes they (centre-backs) are the midfielders, because you don’t have a lot of space between the lines - you have to find the space - the defenders have the game in front of them, and they have to be the midfielders.”, explained Amorim.

Lisandro Martinez has exemplified this to great effect in recent weeks, marauding up the pitch for his goals against Liverpool and Fulham, but its something we don’t see frequently enough from Manchester United’s centre-backs, who are often criticised for their conservatism in possession. Matthijs De Ligt and Harry Maguire likely lack the mobility and recovery pace not least the technical ability required to advance into these midfield positions, while Leny Yoro - who does in fairness possess the skill-set to do so - is still adapting to English football, and doesn’t appear entirely comfortable driving into midfield with the ball just yet.

The week begun at Salford City’s Peninsula Stadium - while United’s usual academy stadium in Leigh Sports Village was unavailable - as the Reds hosted Hertha Berlin’s under-21s in the Premier League International Cup. The competition pits the PL2’s top 16 sides from the previous season against 16 internationally invited clubs, Hertha Berlin being one of them.

According to the Premier League, the purpose of the competition is: “To give homegrown talent the chance to test themselves against a range of different European opponents in a range of different settings and allows all participating players and staff to develop themselves to the demands and different styles presented by European opponents.”

A huddle of Hertha Berlin ultras occupied one corner of the ground, and ensured that their presence was known throughout the game. The intensity of their chanting verged on being comical given the nature of the match.

Travis Binion fielded a strong side, featuring a mix of experience and raw talent -

United’s starting eleven: Graczyk (GK); Kamason, Jackson, Kingdon, Amass; Fitzgerald, Gore, Scanlon; Missin, Wheatley, Mather.

On the bench: Moorhouse, Baumann, Fletcher, Mantato, Biancheri, Murdock (GK), Rowe.

United started on the front-foot, and within the first minute found themselves with a chance to go ahead through Ethan Wheatley, who had intercepted a Hertha defender’s attempted pass out from the back. To Wheatley’s frustration, his shot deflected off the post and was collected by the opposition keeper.

Wheatley popped up again in the fifth minute with another big opportunity, as the towering striker was found free in the box by Dan Gore, but his low-driven shot drifted just wide.

Travis Binion’s side had enjoyed the lions’ share of early chances, but Hertha soon found their feet, and begun building some momentum of their own. The German side were very clearly well drilled, and a handful to deal with in terms of physicality for United’s relatively young side. Once their shape and pressing structure had settled, the visitors became extremely difficult for United to break down, despite the technical brilliance of Dan Gore and Jayce Fitzgerald at the base of United’s midfield.

Hertha had begun pressing high up the pitch, which proved troublesome for United as they struggled to play through the German outfit’s press.

The majority of Hertha’s attacking threat came from wide areas, as Kamason was given the troublesome task of dealing with recurrent attacking overloads on his side. The German’s would routinely double up with a winger and an overlapping full-back providing wide support, making Kamason’s life very difficult. Luckily though United were able to prevent Hertha from mustering any clear cut chances through the first-half. Kamason, who looks set to be a regular in Travis Binion’s under-21 side having impressed for the under-18s last season, was bright in possession and got stuck into his duels admirably.

Just before the break Hertha had ball in the back of the net, though the linesman’s flag went up and the goal was chalked off, saving United at least for the time being.

United’s pivot of Gore and Fitzgerald gradually grew into the game, making their quality known in possession as they searched for solutions to Hertha’s rigid defensive structure and intense press - the pair both possessing exceptional progressive abilities and press resistance. Gore in particular stamped his authority on the game in the second half, making several outlandish carries through the heart of Hertha’s midfield, one of which led to a dangerous free-kick opportunity from scoring-range, though United were unable to convert.

60’ - Triple change for United as Zach Baumann, Tyler Fletcher and Jack Moorhouse replace Dan Gore, Jayce Fitzgerald and James Scanlon.

The majority of United’s limited threat emanated from a left side comprised of Amass, Mather, Gore and at times Fitzgerald - the talented quartet offering some hope of breaking down Hertha’s stubborn block, though United’s eventual breakthrough would come through the centre as the newly introduced Zach Baumann exchanged a give-and-go on the edge of the box with striker Ethan Wheatley, who slipped the Ukraine-eligible midfielder through between Hertha’s defenders to finish and put United 1-0 up.

United’s valiant efforts to protect their lead proved futile in the 93rd minute, as Hertha were awarded an extremely generous penalty. Tyler Fletcher was deemed to have caught an opposition attacker with his leg in the box, though the contact was minimal. Hertha’s ever-present ultras erupted in roars of elation as 23 year-old Ensar Aksakal put his penalty away, securing a point for the visiting side.

Manchester United’s under-18s suffer their first defeat of the campaign… just:

Adam Lawrence’s under-18s made the trip down to London this weekend for their second Premier League Cup fixture of the season, against Tottenham Hotspur.

United’s starting eleven: Murdock (GK); Plunkett, Kukonki, Munro, Armer; T. Fletcher, Fitzgerald, Baumann; Mantato, Scanlon, Biancheri.

On the bench: Thwaites, Byrne-Hughes, Lacey, Ibragimov, Musa.

The Reds’ defence of the Premier League Cup trophy - having won it last season - begun against Leicester City’s under-18s, which made for entertaining viewing (albeit through a score-update app with MUTV coverage absent for this game) as Biancheri’s 97th minute winner secured a brace as well as three points for his side.

United went into this weekend’s fixture still buzzing off the high of their 9-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers in the U18 Premier League North - their fifth win of the league campaign, maintaining a frightening 100% win-rate, with 22 goals scored and just one (!) conceded; numbers that warrant the confidence United exude on the pitch.

The first half of Saturday’s clash with Tottenham however would prove to curb some of that inevitable exuberance, as within just 25 minutes the Reds found themselves three goals behind.

Spurs’ opener arrived in the fifth minute, as Ellis Lehane capped off a move started by Jun’ai Byfield. The centre-back strode with menace out of his defensive line all the way into the final third, before releasing to Williams-Barnett, who would then play a wonderfully weighted through ball into the path of Lehane. Lehane found himself with the easiest task of the three, as he confidently finished past Murdock from close range.

Williams-Barnett had arguably been Tottenham’s brightest attacker in the opening stages, and was determined to increase his side’s goal surplus. In the eighteenth minute, Lehane - who had already caused United’s back line all sorts of problems found a way through once more and fashioned a shot that Murdock could only push back into play. Williams-Barnett had positioned himself well to capitalise on the rebound, and slotted home calmly for Tottenham’s second.

It took just seven minutes for Williams-Barnett to strike again, as United’s day went from bad to worse. The winger cut in from the left flank onto his stronger right-foot and finished past Murdock’s far post to add a third, compounding United’s misery, and seemingly putting the game to bed just 25 minutes deep. Plunkett - a left-back recently signed from Aston Villa, was playing out of his natural position at right-back on this occasion, and so can be afforded some understanding for his struggles in containing Williams-Barnett on the right flank.

Just twice had the ball had crept over United’s near-impenetrable goal line in all competitions up to this point in the season, and so as you’d imagine this early blitz came as some shock - not only to the players but to Adam Lawrence and his staff, one could assume.

Spurs had been impressively clinical, while United were uncharacteristically easy to break down. Despite this there were bright individual showings from United, particularly from midfielders Zach Baumann and Jayce Fitzgerald as well as right-winger Bendito Mantato - the latter creating the majority of United’s early goal threat down the right-flank. The key difference between Saturday’s disappointing performance and the typical showings Adam Lawrence’s side have become known for, stemmed from a rare lack of tactical cohesion in terms of adherence to the press and defensive structure out of possession. It’s possible that an element of complacency played some role in this, given that United had been so dominant domestically up to this point, though I’m sure that this will prove to be a minor blip, rather than any real cause for concern.

United went into half time three goals down, eager to rectify the frustrations of the opening forty-five, but Williams-Barnett had other ideas. Six minutes into the second half, Tyrese Hall played Williams-Barnett through between Armer and Fitzgerald in the centre of defence with a lovely trivela pass, gifting him a golden opportunity to add Spurs’ fourth and complete his hat-trick, which he executed confidently. The home side’s goal came against the run of play, as United had been relatively dominant in possession throughout the latter stages of the first-half.

51’ - Tottenham Hotspur 4-0 Manchester United.

Confidence was at rock-bottom, but Adam Lawrence had a trick up his sleeve, and around the sixtieth minute made a change that would flip the game’s momentum on its head: the introduction of Shea Lacey.

The young winger came on for just his second appearance since returning from a prolonged injury absence after suffering a quad tear requiring over five months of rehab and recovery. With a left-foot made of gold, low centre of gravity and supreme technical and creative qualities, Shea Lacey is a name that’s been on the lips of United’s academy followers for a long time, and so his return to fitness comes as a great relief to many.

Every time United were in possession, the aim was to get him on the ball, and every time they did, Spurs looked visibly terrified.

Fifteen minutes after his introduction, having already made a noticeable impact on United’s attacking dynamics, Lacey chipped in with his first goal, assisted by fellow second-half substitute Amir Ibragimov. The finish mirrored Williams-Barnett’s second but from the opposite side - bursting past Spurs’ left-back, cutting in and slotting past the near post.

Two minutes later, Lacey halved United’s deficit with a less elegant, but equally meaningful goal. Biancheri picked up a loose Spurs ball around the edge of the box, and slipped Lacey through, who then cut onto his weaker right foot, and fired a shot at Tottenham’s keeper who fumbled his save, letting the ball cross the goal line (just).

Lacey had single-handedly made things competitive again, and suddenly Tottenham’s confidence had turned into panic.

At the 86 minute mark, Biancheri was taken down in the box after being played through by Lacey, winning a penalty for United. The Welshman stepped up and converted calmly for his twelfth goal of the season, and in doing so put United within reaching distance of a result.

There was a palpable desperation on United’s part to find an equaliser, and they almost did in the 96th minute. Lacey, who had been nothing short of outstanding since his introduction was found by Jayce Fitzgerald’s long-range switch. The winger brought the ball down and started his offensive, taking it round Spurs’ left-back and dribbling along the touchline. England under-17 captain Malachi Hardy squared up to Lacey, but was left in the dust, as United’s right-winger powered towards goal, before picking out Victor Musa in a pocket space amongst the chaos of the box. Unfortunately, Musa was unable to put the necessary lift on the ball to clear Spurs’ blockade of defenders, and the opportunity faded away.

The referee soon blew for full-time, as United were held to a defeat despite showing courageous fighting spirit in the second half. The match provided United’s under-18s with a valuable test of character, being put in a foreign position at four goals down, but they took to the task admirably, and will no doubt learn from the experience.

United as a result sit second in Group B of the Premier League Cup, behind Leeds and ahead of Spurs on goal difference and Leicester who are without a single point as of yet.

United’s under-21s are held to defeat by Liverpool in Leigh:

Sunday’s PL2 fixture between two fierce rivals in Manchester United and Liverpool at Leigh Sports Village promised to be a tense affair, as is often the case when these sides meet regardless of the age group involved.

Travis Binion named a heavily rotated side featuring seven changes from Tuesday’s fixture against Hertha Berlin, with Mee, Ogunneye, Fredricson, Collyer, Fletcher, Williams and Ennis entering the side.

United’s starting eleven: Mee (GK), Amass, Fredricson, Kingdon, Ogunneye; Gore (C), Collyer, Fletcher; Williams, Wheatley, Ennis.

On the bench: Graczyk, Jackson, Kamason, Rowe, Mather.

Discussions before the game centred around the midfield battle that would pit United’s talented midfield trio of Dan Gore, Toby Collyer and Jack Fletcher against Liverpool’s Trey Nyoni, Tyler Morton and Dominic Corness. Nyoni’s proximity in particular to the first team setup at Liverpool echoes that of Collyer and Gore - a parallel which would make for an interesting contest.

United’s right-winger Ethan Ennis went into the game with a point to prove against his former club Liverpool, from whom he joined United in 2021 - the Red Devils beating Chelsea amongst other clubs for his signature.

Saturday’s star Shea Lacey was present at Leigh to watch United’s under-21s, 24 hours after his brilliant substitute appearance against Spurs, alongside several other academy players.

As was the case earlier in the week against Hertha Berlin, Ethan Wheatley started on the front-foot, immediately applying pressure on Liverpool’s keeper Kornel Misciur who not long ago joined the Merseyside club from Hull City. Misciur hesitated when releasing the ball, almost gifting Wheatley an opportunity to steal it and put his side ahead. Luckily for Liverpool he was able to regain his composure and clear his lines.

Keiran Morrison, a Liverpool player who spent a number of years in United’s academy ranks joined the action in the 12th minute, as Tommy Pilling was forced off through injury, appearing to have felt something in his knee.

Trey Nyoni, who is highly regarded within England’s youth setup as well as Liverpool’s first team, was kept largely quiet throughout the game, as Collyer and Gore effectively carried out their defensive responsibilities from the base of United’s midfield. Nyoni’s quality was evident in the subtle details like his first touch and pass selection, though the Leicester youth product was never truly able to get going.

One of United’s brighter players particularly in the first half for me was Tyler Fredricson - another youngster who only recently returned from a lengthy injury bout. The 2022 FA Youth Cup winner looked assured on the ball, routinely sending line-breaking passes into United’s pivot of Gore and Collyer, as well as showing courage in carrying the ball goalward himself. One particularly impressive instance of this around the 25th minute mark saw 19 year-old Fredricson embark on a solo offensive from his defensive line to Liverpool’s box, prompting the referee to book Liverpool’s Lee Jonas who was forced to foul United’s centre-back to avoid conceding a goalscoring opportunity. Fredricson also contributed significantly to United’s defensive efforts, popping up with a number of important blocks, tackles and interceptions throughout the game.

United’s best chance of the first half came in the 27th minute from a move that started in United’s midfield: Collyer recovered possession before passing forward to Jack Fletcher in the centre, who then set Ogunneye free on the right-wing. Ogunneye looked up and delivered a powerful cross into Ennis in the centre of Liverpool’s box, though the ball’s lack of height prevented him from getting any real power behind his effort, and Misciur was able to save calmly.

Dan Gore also found a grove late in the first half, and begun probing at Liverpool’s defensive core, with a handful of runs that echoed those of Tuesday evening’s performance. One of these runs almost led to goal, as a neat drop of the shoulder sent two of Liverpool’s defenders the wrong way, but Gore was unable to trouble Misciur, who had impressed with regard to shot-stopping.

United fashioned another big chance just before half time, as Collyer slipped through Gore, who then played wonderfully weighted disguised through ball into the path of Ennis, whose effort from very close range was deflected very nearly rolling into Liverpool’s goal.

Ultimately though United were unable to break the deadlock, and went into half time level with the visitors.

Travis Binion looked to have implemented some tactical tweaks upon half time, as Ogunneye inverted into the right central midfield position while United formed a 3-2-5 shape in possession with Collyer dropping into the left side of a back three. This revised shape led to new passing angles and resultingly a more fluid build-up phase for United.

With 68 minutes gone by, Liverpool found a breakthrough in the form of a goalkeeper error. Dermot Mee looked understandably frustrated with himself after gifting Tyler Morton the ball on the edge of the box. United’s keeper did well to save the initial effort but could do nothing about the follow-up, as Morton composed himself and finished into United’s empty net. Pathetic fallacy amplified the deflated mood as rain begun pouring down at Leigh Spots Village.

It’s worth noting that Dermot Mee has produced a number of performances to be proud of in recent weeks especially in terms of his distribution and ball playing. Every young keeper is bound to make costly mistakes and this was one of them, but I’m confident that Mee will take this in his stride and use the blunder as a learning experience as opposed to getting caught up on it.

Liverpool were content with sitting deep and soaking up the pressure until the full-time whistle blew, despite United’s attempts to find an equaliser, and so ultimately had to settle for defeat.

Chido Obi-Martin announces his transfer to Manchester United:

In more positive news for the Reds, highly rated Danish striker prospect Chido Obi-Martin (16) took to social media over the weekend to announce that he’s joined Manchester United.

United faced competition from the likes of Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City for the Arsenal product’s signature, demonstrating the talent young Obi-Martin is deemed to possess.

The post included a previously unseen photograph of a very young Chido Obi-Martin wearing a Manchester United kit, confirming his rumoured long standing affection for the club.

It’s expected that United will give Chido Obi-Martin the necessary time to acclimatise to his new environment and return to full fitness levels having missed out on a formal pre-season.

This particular screenshot did the rounds on social media… I don’t think it requires any comment.

Erik Ten Hag’s apparent reluctance to address an issue that even the most hands-off fans could identify begged the question as to whether the problem was rooted in tactical indecision or personnel limitations.

United have already taken a huge step towards addressing this disturbing flaw in signing Leny Yoro - a player touted as his generation’s biggest defensive promise. The “Mbappe of centre-backs”, in the eyes of Real Madrid, who seemed the Frenchman’s inevitable destination. INEOS however, had other ideas.

Yoro’s suitability in the traditional sweeper role, similar to Raphaël Varane - a player the Lille academy product has earned frequent comparisons with, makes him an ideal counter-measure to the Red Devil’s reluctance, or inability, to play a high defensive line. Only an elite few of Europe’s top centre-backs possess the athletic qualities and defensive aptitude to contest an opposition attacker from behind once they’ve broken through on goal - Liverpool’s Virgil Van Dijk and Arsenal’s William Saliba come to mind - as does Leny Yoro. His blistering pace and spider-like legs allow for even the most unlikely defensive recoveries to be made.

That being said - an eighteen-year-old, regardless of any unprecedented ability and maturity, cannot be solely burdened by the defensive responsibilities of a club with Manchester United’s global reputation and stature. Injuries, mistakes and inconsistency must all be factored into the equation, forcing United’s hand to take further measures - such as identifying a #6 with both the engine required to occupy large spaces and the technical quality to provide adequate ball retention and progression in possession.

Ground coverage has become one of the most sought-after attributes in modern-day #6s - the type of pace and running power that allows a lone pivot to single-handedly stifle an opposition counter-attack. It’s why players like Declan Rice can command transfer fees upwards of £100M without excessive media pushback. It’s also something Ten Hag’s Reds desperately lacked last season.

Despite Mainoo’s many elite qualities - athleticism and running power certainly aren’t those you’d typically consider among his biggest strengths. The Stockport product’s true genius manifests when his team are in possession of the ball. Kobbie’s defensive anticipation and work rate go a long way in compensating for a lack of explosivity, though the truth remains that he’ll never be a Declan Rice when it comes to eating up ground and preventing transitional threat.

Mainoo’s natural ability alone dictates he’ll shine regardless of those around him, though the club would be well placed to ensure that a talent of his calibre is facilitated by complementary profiles conducive to minimising his weaknesses and expressing his unique skillset.

It’s this pertinent need for an expert midfield duel winner and transitional stopper that presents the latest of Unai Emery’s Aston Villa recruits - Amadou Onana as an obvious missed opportunity, especially given his accessible price point at £50M - not far from the rumoured fee discussed for alternate United midfield target, Manuel Ugarte.

Onana’s technical limitations (often accredited with United’s choice not to pursue a transfer) are for me overstated, perhaps symptomatic of Everton’s pragmatic approach under Sean Dyche - as opposed to any unmitigated weakness on the ball. Within a more possession-based framework - Belgium’s national team for example - the 195cm midfield giant is able to showcase the more technical side of his game, consistently offering his side’s defensive line a dependable first-phase outlet - receiving and turning with considerable reliability before progressing the ball through the thirds - illustrating the kind of press resistance and ball retention capabilities now considered prerequisites for modern-day #6s.

Mainoo’s physical shortcomings last campaign weren’t helped in the least by the sharp decline in athleticism and defensive prowess observed in Casemiro, as his first-season heroics turned to second-season woes. Carl Anka of the Athletic wrote a fantastic article delving into the Brazilian’s demise, emphasising that, “Casemiro has been dribbled past this season and exploited more by opponents. This is a problem for the side’s defence and attack. As he is no longer an effective counter-presser, United are leakier in and around their penalty area and less likely to work the ball towards the opposition’s one.” Anka also contextualised Casemiro’s fall-off with statistics illustrative of a sizeable decrease in tackles, fouls, clearances, blocks and overall defensive impact.

It’s clear that the once-great Real Madrid star is no longer up to the standard required, and that value-for-money market opportunities are few and far between, so who else can United turn to? I believe - as is often the case - that Carrington may hold the answer.

The academy has long underpinned virtually any success that comes Manchester United’s way - a theme that holds true even today; both of United’s scorers in last season’s FA Cup final - Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo - came through the famed Carrington youth setup after all. United’s youth production line seemingly always finds a way to unearth a gem when it’s needed most. This almost prophetic tendency could end the Red Devils' long search for a top-level defensive midfielder in the shape of Toby Collyer.

Signed from the Seagulls in March 2022 - having captained England’s under-16 and under-17 youth sides - Collyer joined United with a reputation as one of the country’s most prized young midfielders. The Red Devils were said to have faced significant competition from rival Premier League clubs for young Collyer’s signature.

Despite having spent two full seasons at the club, Toby remains somewhat of an unknown quality to even United’s most avid academy followers - at least relative to some of his under-18 peers that is - due to the PL2’s quite frankly puzzling broadcasting rules dictating that games overlapping with live Premier League fixtures cannot be streamed live.

Eagle-eyed fans following Manchester United’s historic FA Cup victory over Manchester City last season picked up on a detail that could provide a significant clue as to Erik Ten Hag’s valuation of Collyer. The Dutchman, amid the chaos of United’s on-field trophy celebrations, made a direct b-line toward Toby, sharing what appeared to be words of encouragement and belief in the midfielder's role in the club’s future successes and continued hopes of silverware. Parallels were soon drawn between this brief exchange, and an eerily similar instance between Ten Hag and Kobbie Mainoo noticed during United’s Carabao Cup celebrations in 2023. As was the case for Collyer, Ten Hag made a clear and deliberate approach to Mainoo amongst the frenzy of Red shirts rampant in revelry, where it has since been revealed by the breakthrough star that Ten Hag’s message to the then-seventeen-year-old was an approximation of: “Your day will come, we are going to win trophies together and your day is coming”. I’d be willing to bet that Erik’s exchange with Collyer communicated a very similar message.

So what is it about Collyer’s profile that Ten Hag seemingly values above his competitors within, and potentially even outside the club?

The most prominent factor distinguishing the former Brighton man from his peers is his physical profile. Collyer has benefited from a fortunate growth spurt over the last year or so, now standing at around 186cm (6’1), despite Google listing his height at a mere 175cm (5’7). A similar jump in stature was observed in Mainoo during the months leading up to his eventual breakthrough, which bodes well for Collyer’s chances of adapting quickly to the rigours of Premier League football.

A relatively slight, but solid frame, long legs and a compact torso make for top-level mobility in Collyer’s case, with quick and controlled changes of pace and direction and a small turning radius. These are qualities that can make a world difference both in and out of possession, whether it’s evading pressure in possession or contesting opposition players in ground duels - a mobile frame is an excellent foundation to build from. As well as being a nimble mover, Collyer displays impressive core strength when initiating contact, often coming out on top of physical battles against those several years his senior.

Collyer’s most prized asset without doubt however is his ability to eat up ground, the extent to which has only become fully apparent in his pre-season performances for United in recent weeks. Academy football doesn’t always allow a player’s full athletic capacities to be aptly illustrated. Coaches tend to prioritise individual freedom of expression over structural or tactical rigidity, therefore games are often more chaotic, resulting in smaller-feeling pitches, and fewer opportunities for top-speed foot races across long distances. This is part of the reason it’s so hard to predict first-team translatability from youth football in the majority of cases, and why some players have such surprising breakthroughs, as a result of their physical traits finally being utilised to their full capacities. Collyer’s straight-line sprint speed is quite possibly in the same bracket as Declan Rice and Amadou Onana, covering ground with amazing prolificacy and contributing enormously to United’s defensive efforts in the middle of the park. In a potential midfield three of Collyer, Mainoo and Fernandes, the latter two would be given far more freedom to push forward and contribute in the final third thanks to the increased defensive coverage Collyer brings compared to a Casemiro or McTominay.

The nineteen-year-old’s out-of-possession exploits aren’t limited purely to his pace - Collyer’s off-ball movement is illustrative of real intelligence and a strong understanding of space and timing. Toby is equally capable of recognising when to advance up the pitch as he is of knowing when to drop into space vacated by a teammate to maintain his side’s defensive structure. His constant circulating runs off the ball bring positive value to his side that cannot be overtly contextualised by statistics. Ten Hag has no doubt picked up on this - intelligent midfielders have historically shone in his teams, which famously demand a high level of tactical understanding and adaptability. Collyer’s proactive efforts to occupy spaces left open by teammates could prevent situations frequently observed last season in which acres of space are vacated by a lack of tactical cohesion amongst United’s midfielders, leaving them vulnerable to counter-attacks.

The youngster helps to maintain United’s pressing structure in the middle of the park, cutting off passing lanes and making close-range interceptions with particular efficacy. It’s this that makes him suitable to play in a deep two, though doesn’t rule out the potential for him to evolve into someone more capable of occupying the lone-six role.

The biggest question mark around Collyer’s suitability remains his quality on the ball. What he brings out of possession, as has been established, places him at the top of United’s crop, though to become a top-level holding midfielder, he’ll need to develop in a number of areas in possession.

While already adept on the half-turn, Collyer can be guilty of complacency when receiving the ball and could benefit from one extra scan before making contact, otherwise risks being dispossessed rather easily. This was seen once or twice for Untied against Rosenborg, who pressed intensely having already been half way through their domestic season at the time of playing Untied. Maybe this could be put down to rustiness on Toby’s part, though remains something worth working on for the young midfielder.

Ball progression and passing range are also areas that could be worked on for young Collyer, who has so far only displayed rather conservative tendencies with regard to pass selection and execution - often opting for the short, easy option - which isn’t necessarily a bad thing - but adding that increased range and creativity to his passing could take his game up a level or two. United have missed a world-class ball-playing anchor since the days of Michael Carrick, who has never truly been shown the respect of a worthy replacement. Jayce Fitzgerald - a second-year under-18 going into the new season, is a fine example of someone who already possesses a more refined skillset in this department. Jayce, who has been at the club since the age of seven, has already taken part in first-team training on several occasions and is thought to be highly regarded within United’s youth setup. Coming back from an injury which kept him out of action for a large portion of last season, he’s one worth keeping an eye on ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

But back to Collyer - his technical ability is certainly at a level which can be deemed adequate to play in United’s midfield, though isn’t yet exemplary. Increased tidiness on the ball, more reliable retention and scanning, and more adventurous ball-carrying attempts are things I’d like to see him work on, or showcase more evidently, as United’s pre-season tour continues in the USA.

In any case, with a loan all but ruled out, and the chances of United recruiting a starting #6 this summer looking increasingly slim, Collyer - who has just signed a new contract keeping him at the club until 2027 with an option for an extra year - looks set to figure prominently for United, who enter the new season with more promise and momentum behind them than any in recent memory.

Despite not being notoriously prolific in terms of producing first-team quality academy graduates (at least relative to their top-six peers), Tottenham Hotspur have stumbled across a diamond in Mikey Moore. Harry Kane - a fellow Spurs graduate, throughout his career has established himself as one of the brightest footballers of his generation, though his ability at sixteen pales in comparison to young Mikey. A left-winger-come-inside-forward with an outstanding combination of technical, physical and mental attributes - Moore has garnered a reputation within the English youth system as a special prospect. 

The dazzling forward has progressed rapidly through the Spurs ranks, playing a year or two up at every level. Last season though technically still an under-16 - Moore played an instrumental role in his side’s domestic double, winning both the under-17 and under-18 Premier League Cups. The London-born prodigy has continued to build on his first-season triumphs both in terms of numbers and increased proximity to first-team involvement. With 16 goals and nine assists in all competitions at under-18 level this season, Moore has made it impossible for Ange Postecoglou to overlook his talents - not that he’d have any interest in doing so. By now, Mikey is well accustomed to the physical rigours of senior football, in fact, the England under-17’s presence amongst Tottenham’s senior training cohort actually predates former Celtic boss Postecoglou, with Moore’s involvement in first-team sessions dating as far back as April 2023. 

Tonight - he produced a display that will fuel conversation among avid Spurs and England youth followers for years to come - an outstanding performance aptly paired with an impressive brace - all seemingly without breaking a sweat. Moore went into today’s game carrying the weight of immense expectations following his recent Premier League cameos, which were all but exceeded by the two-minute mark. 

After a dominant opening to proceedings for England with the lion's share of possession in their favour, a well-orchestrated attack down France's left defensive flank culminated in the opener - Mikey's first of the night. A well-timed run to meet Leo Shahar’s pin-point cross and a neatly placed header across France’s helpless goalkeeper into the bottom-right corner put England 1-0 up, just 82 seconds deep.

Mikey had stamped his authority on proceedings, from which point France’s defence could only provide a passive audience for the mastery that would follow, as opposed to any form of oppositional presence. 

Despite bright first-half showings from Arsenal star Ethan Nwaneri and United’s domestic treble winner Jack Fletcher, among others - Moore was the ringmaster of England’s skill circus, with innovation and creativity underpinning his every move during the opening forty-five minutes. The ability to problem solve in any number of possession-based contexts is a trait seemingly universal amongst great offensive players - a reliable hallmark of a top attacker, which Mikey proved no exception to, consistently finding new solutions to the problems France's under-17s attempted to throw at him. 

It took just sixteen minutes from his first goal for Moore to manufacture his next scoring opportunity. A cross-field switch from England’s right side of defence met the winger in full stride, who in a calculated display of both skill and wit, knocked the ball past his defensive equal with his first touch. Soon after, in attempting to invert play, Mikey slipped but quickly regained his footing (beating his man in the process) and continued his solo offensive. After waltzing through Les Blues’ defence - thanks to a handful of shrewd shimmies and crafty cutbacks - and exchanging a concise one-two with Port Vale’s Baylee Dipepa, Moore found himself just yards away from France’s goalmouth once more. The angle was far from favourable, but the Spurs star wasn’t going to shy away from the challenge having got that far. The cutback to Dipepa was on - but Mikey had other ideas, though no sooner was grounded by the harsh reality of his miscued effort, which flew wide of the target, taming his almost brash self-assurance, at least for the moment. 

Just past thirty minutes England’s goal scorer set out once again to wreak havoc on France’s defence, this time through creating a potential scoring opportunity for a teammate. McFarlane set Moore into space on the touchline, narrowly escaping France's wide press - allowing him to drive into the resulting space. Mikey paused just outside the opposition box, before deftly releasing the ball with a neat outside-footed pass into the feet of Dipepa, who unfortunately struggled to convert with his back to goal. In hesitating before releasing the ball, Mikey demonstrated ‘La Pausa’ - a Spanish term referring to the understanding of when to delay the execution of a final ball, in anticipation of a more advantageous or opportune game state - an inherent ability separating the good playmakers from the great. 

His second goal in the 38th minute was nothing short of genius. Centre-back Samuel Amissah picked up possession in England’s defensive half before driving forward and slipping Moore through, who had made himself available to receive the ball in the left half-space. Though a seemingly minor detail - the way he set up to receive the ball made all the difference. Rather than collecting with his back to goal before attempting to turn his defender or recycle possession as many in his position would, Mikey let the ball roll past him in a creative touch, allowing for a more fluid body transition and thus facilitating his approach on goal. Using the momentum gained by avoiding premature contact, Moore propelled himself goalward, ensuring the ball remained no more than a foot away from him at any time. France’s panicked defenders swarmed the England attacker on the edge of the box in an attempt to nullify the threat but were unsurprisingly bypassed. The incredible solo run was capped off by a clinical cross-goal finish to secure England’s second. Those in stands at the Ammochostos Stadium were left in disbelief at the level of natural talent being showcased by Moore - now on a brace - despite being one of the youngest players on the pitch. 

The Tottenham talisman continued to probe away at France’s dishevelled defence until his eventual substitution in the 72nd minute, replaced by Manchester United’s Harry Amass - another exceptional young talent on the verge of first-team involvement at his club. Ethan Nwaneri’s spectacular curled effort from outside the box in the second half capped off a hugely successful evening for England, sealing their fourth of the night and compounding France’s brutal humiliation. 

The young lions have thrown their hat in the ring as one of the competition's strong favourites, having already dispatched (with ease) one of the toughest opponents they’ll likely face.

I’m anticipating an impressive breakthrough 2024-25 season for Moore, who looks set to take part in Tottenham’s summer pre-season tour in Asia. Loan moves are typically out of the question for prospects of Mikey’s calibre, and therefore, I suspect he’ll remain close to first-team affairs, ready and waiting to pounce on any opportunity to establish himself as a known entity in the squad - be that in lieu of first-team absentees, or by forcing the issue himself. For a player of his potential, I wouldn’t overlook the possibility of the latter. 

Of course, for any young player expectations must be tempered irrespective of potential. Development isn’t linear after all, and any number of mitigating factors could hinder one's progress. That being said - barring long-term injury or other unforeseen circumstances, I predict a very bright future for the Tottenham-hyper-talent. 

Article 19 is a regulation introduced by Brexit and subsequently enforced by FIFA, dictating that clubs are prohibited from doing business with overseas clubs for players yet to turn eighteen. For context, had this rule always been in place, the Premier League may never have had the privilege of witnessing the masterful talents of Cesc Fàbregas or Paul Pogba; both of which were signed by their respective clubs under the age of eighteen.

In anticipation of these changes, Britain's elite clubs sought to take advantage of the remaining window of opportunity for overseas academy recruitment. Perhaps the most notable instance of this was John Murtough and Manchester United's European raid in the summer of 2020. This operation saw the arrivals of Isak Hansen-Aarøen, Willy Kambwala, Marc Jurado, Alvaro Fernandez, Radek Vítek and, of course, Alejandro Garnacho - a move that continues to have lasting positive impacts on the club.

Article 19 has made for a more volatile and unpredictable British under-18 market than ever, with young players more frequently rejecting scholarship deals at their clubs in favour of other category-one academies offering better financial and developmental incentives. This summer has evidenced an ever-increasing focus on domestic recruitment, with several high-profile deals receiving far more media coverage than in previous years; for example, Ethan Nwaneri’s initial reluctance to sign a scholarship and subsequent extension at Arsenal. A pertinent case in point of the volatile nature of today’s market is Harrison Parker - in three years the sixteen-year-old England international has played for Arsenal, Manchester United, and just recently completed a move to Manchester City, as reported by Fabrizio Romano

This new-found trend of young players hopping from club to club with little regard for loyalty is suggestive of the changes brought about by Brexit and the ways that Category-one British academies have adapted to continue facilitating development and first-team contribution. Ultimately, this results in elite clubs struggling more than ever to keep hold of their best talents, with more power finding itself in the hands of young British players, who are in a stronger position to make financial demands that would have been inappropriate in the past. These changes also worsen the pre-existing negative implications of the Premier League’s Elite Player Performance Plan, or EPPP, upon lower division clubs, who can put up little-to-no fight when category one clubs come sniffing around their finest produce.

Some clubs have attempted to find legal loopholes and feasible workarounds to maintain their European connections, most commonly through utilising their pre-existing or newly conceived multi-club models or so-called 'sister clubs' to outsource their developmental efforts. A multi-club approach lets clubs like Manchester City recruit European talents through their EU-based affiliates before evaluating them and deciding whether to sign them or continue their development overseas. Tony Bloom of Brighton also takes advantage of similar strategies.

A notable upside of restricted EU recruitment is the vastly improved scouting networks deployed in Africa, Asia and South America, as was recently highlighted by Chelsea's acquisition of the highly regarded Ecuadorian wonderkid Kendry Páez from Independiente del Valle.

Rumours have circulated regarding the reversal of these regulations, with Italian clubs recently being granted permission by FIFA to sign English players after turning sixteen. Despite this, Article 19 continues to scupper the European recruitment hopes of British clubs.
